Construction of a new nuclear power station at Hinkley Point C in Somerset has been fully underway for six months and the project has already seen great progress. • Three million cubic metres of earth have been moved and there are 1,600 workers on the site each day. Concrete has been poured to build the first permanent structures to build the power station’s galleries, which are a network of connected tunnels which will carry cabling and pipes. This is the first civil ‘nuclear safety grade’ concrete to have been poured in the UK since the construction of Sizewell B 30 years ago. • Construction has also begun for a new 500m temporary jetty in the Bristol Channel to allow 80% of construction materials to be brought in by sea, minimising the impact on the roads for the local community. Every shipload of materials to the jetty will take the equivalent of 250 lorry-loads off the local roads. • Other activity on site includes the construction of 15 on-site accommodation buildings for more than 500 workers and the construction of a spray batching plant to produce a finer quality of concrete for the secure slopes at the site. • ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- • Stay connected: • ● Hinkley Point C website: https://bit.ly/3dCj7vu • ● Instagram: https://bit.ly/31m1HON • ● Twitter: https://bit.ly/349qxTN
