Girdling Roots on a Maple Tree

Girdling roots are roots that cross over or wrap around other roots. As the roots grow and enlarge, the girdling roots can strangle other roots, cutting off the normal transport of water and nutrients inside the tree. When a girdling root has grown large (6 inches or more in diameter), there is little that can be done to fix it without harming the tree. However, if you see small girdling roots (about 1 inch in diameter or less) beginning to grow around the base of your tree, you can cut them loose using loppers, pruners, or a saw. Just be careful that you don't injure the healthy root(s) underneath. • -Presented by Meg Smolinski, University of Maryland Arboretum Outreach Coordinator • More about girdling roots: • https://extension.umd.edu/resource/gi... • Plan a visit to the University of Maryland Arboretum and Botanical Garden: • https://arboretum.umd.edu/ • --- • The University of Maryland Extension Home and Garden Information Center's mission is to develop and deliver science-based, sustainable gardening information and solutions through outreach education for better human and environmental health. • • Send us your plant and pest questions.
