Their smash debut, “Please Mr. Postman”, was co-written by Georgia Dobbins with William Garrett, Brian Holland, Robert Bateman and Freddie Gorman, and featured a session drummer named Marvin Gaye. • Georgeanna Tillman, Gladys Horton, Katherine Anderson, Georgia Dobbins and Juanita Cowart were Inkster High girls. Sweet and a bit shy, they entered a school talent contest in 1961 which offered a chance to audition for Motown. Although they scored fifth place, their teacher, Mrs. Shirley Sharpley, convinced Motown rep John Oden to include the group with others to be auditioned. The Marvelettes were the only ones who came away with a contract. • Wanda Young joined when Georgina Dobbins dropped out before their first release. (In ’62, when Wanda was unable to travel, Florence Ballard of the hit-less Supremes filled in on the road.) Juanita Cowart resigned when the road proved too strenuous. Eventually the group dispersed, with marriage and illness taking their toll on stardom. Georgeanna Tillman died in 1980 of sickle cell anemia. • The Marvelettes, with Gladys usually singing lead, were stars before the company’s international explosion.
