It was thought that an event of this magnitude was impossible on our planet prior to this. With that being said, geologists noted that prior to 1958, there were scour marks in high elevations that pointed to events of considerable magnitude, hinting at past mega tsunamis that occurred in this area of Alaska. This proved to be true and Lituya Bay has undergone several mega tsunami events linked to landslides dating as far back as the early 1850s. • The geologically active region is the cause for these landslides, as they occurred after high magnitude earthquakes displace vast quantities of material from the mountainous ravine, smashing them into the bay and producing terrifying waves of tremendous magnitude. Further evidence was found in tree cores, which documented the impact of the wave. Along with this, the vegetation that grows near to the bay are all new growth, puzzling scientists as the rest of the region contains old growth forests that have been untouched for centuries.
