ANAK DALITA (Child of Misery) • Kundimans (traditional Filipino love songs) gained recognition as a genre of Filipino folk songs with the publication in 1917 of “Anak ng Dalita”, which is generally acknowledged as the first of its kind. The song earned its composer, Francisco Santiago, the title “Father of Filipino Kundimans”. Kundimans are plaintive expressions of love, affection, and yearning for the apple of a man’s eye and are the staple of young, as well as not-so-young, men who go out at night to serenade the women that have struck a chord in their hearts. With its high notes, Anak ng Dalita is often included in the • repertoire of Filipino tenors during recitals. Wherever it is sung, in recital halls or in homes, Anak • ng Dalita is a classic, loved both for its touching melodic tones and lyrics. • English translation: Child of Misery • I am wallowing in misery • full of tears • I'm here crying • For your compassion • • Look to the heavens • And hear • my distress • And longings • If you have no pity • For my suffering • My heart and spirit • Are destined for the grave • Ask if it's not true • From the glimmering stars • Ask the clouds too • Of the longings I feel • KORO • In the dark of night • I stay awake • Your photograph • The only light • If you fall asleep • In the middle of the night • Please let your heart • Fall unto me • Your image • Is my only light • Please let your heart • Be mine • KODA • Please give, please give me • Life, hope, hope • Music by Francisco Santiago • Words by Deogracias A.
