The Class 508 were built between 1979 and 1980, but initially operated on the Southern Region, before reaching Merseyside in 1982. Both classes operate all services across the Merseyrail network, but since January 2023 the newer Class 777 ( • Merseyrail | Class 777 | May 2023 ) have started to enter service. These are due to operate all Merseyrail services with the class 507 and 508 going for scrap. Since this video was recorded (over a number of days in March and May), a number of units featured have been withdrawn and gone for scrap. They are denoted by an asterisk (*) below. • Class 507 Featured: • 507 007, 507 008*, 507 010, 507 012*, 507 014, 507 016, 507 017, 507 020, 507 023, 507 025*, 507 026*, 507 027*, 507 029 • Class 508 Featured: • 508 104, 508 108, 508 111*, 508 112, 508 114, 508 115*, 508 117, 508 120, 508 130, 508 131, 508 139 • The Northern Line covers a number of branches on the Liverpool city side of the River Mersey. There is the main spine of the route from Hunts Cross in the south to Southport in the north. At Sandhills a line branches off to Kirkdale. From Kirkdale there are two branches to Kirkby (now Headbolt Lane) and Ormskirk. Trains on these two branches only operate to Liverpool Central.
