Bauhaus World Heritage Gropius residential neighbourhood

In 1925 Gropius won a hotly contested design contest to build a residential neighbourhood in Dessau. His vision of the spatial layout and efficient building appealed to the authorities. • There was then a housing shortage and that had to be addressed. Gropius introduced concepts like prefabrication and standardisation. They built 130 houses in 70 days, and so cheaply that manual labourers could afford one too. • The Steel House (Stahlhaus) by Bauhaus architect Georg Muche, did not quite make it in the design contest. This 'Stranger in Paradise' continues in life as a tourist attraction. • In 1927 Hannes Meyer became director of the Bauhaus.
