How Stalin EXECUTED His Own Son

During the Second World War, there was a very high profile soldier captured during Operation Barbarossa and it was the son of the Dictator of the Soviet Union. The Germans seized Yakov Dzhugashvili, the oldest son of Joseph Stalin after he was caught fighting the Wehrmacht with his artillery regiment during the Battle of Smolensk. His father Stalin had issued a no surrender and no retreat order, and was furious that his own son had been captured by his bitter enemy. However this rage and anger would cause Stalin to practically sign his own sons death warrant. • There were a number of prisoner swaps proposed by Hitler to exchange Stalin's son for a few high profile German captives. Hitler first offered to swap Dzhugashvili for his own nephew Heinz Hitler who was captured during the Invasion of the Soviet Union, however this was rejected and Heinz was killed in a Moscow Prison. Another proposal put forward by Hitler was to swap Stalin's son for the captured German General Friedrich Paulus who was seized following the German defeat at the Battle of Stalingrad. But this was also rejected, as was a proposal to swap Stalin's son for another one of Hitler's nephews. These rejections were led by the fact Stalin was so angry that his own son had surrendered to his enemies and he saw this as the ultimate disgrace. Yakov Dzhugashvili was later killed inside of Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp, but Stalin had the chance to save his oldest son. • Join us today as we look at, 'How Stalin 'EXECUTED' His Own Son!'
