In our bodies, cells undergo a controlled process of self-destruction known as apoptosis or programmed cell death. Apoptosis plays a crucial role in maintaining the balance and integrity of tissues and organs. When a cell becomes damaged, infected, or is no longer needed, a series of molecular signals is triggered within the cell, leading to its demise. These signals activate specific proteins called caspases, which act as molecular scissors, cleaving key cellular components and initiating a cascade of events that result in the dismantling and disposal of the cell. • Apoptosis serves several important functions, such as removing potentially harmful or abnormal cells, shaping tissues during development, and maintaining the appropriate cell numbers in different organs. • The process of apoptosis is tightly regulated to prevent excessive or inadequate cell death. It is influenced by various internal and external factors, including genetic instructions, cellular stress, hormones, and signals from neighbouring cells. The signalling pathways involved in apoptosis are complex and interconnected, involving a delicate balance between pro-apoptotic signals that promote cell death and anti-apoptotic signals that prevent it. Dysregulation of apoptosis can have significant implications for human health, as abnormalities in cell death can contribute to various diseases, including cancer, autoimmune disorders, and neurodegenerative conditions. Therefore, understanding the mechanisms of cell self-destruction is crucial for developing therapeutic interventions and maintaining the proper functioning of our bodies. • Animation By: Sandeep V.
