I am constantly amazed at what scientists are doing with genetic engineering, and here are three interesting examples. • 👉 Genetic Engineering Playlist - • Genetic Engineering • In this video, I look at three examples of how genetic engineering has been used to protect crops and improve food. • 1. BT Cotton - Cotton has been engineered to produce a toxin from bacteria that protects it from insect pests, reducing the need for harmful insecticides. However, this has led to unintended consequences for farmers in India. • 2. Venomous Cabbage - Cabbages have been modified to express scorpion venom to target pests like the diamondback moth larvae. While this toxin is lethal to the larvae, it's safe for humans. But would you be comfortable eating cabbage knowing it contains scorpion venom? • 3. Golden Rice - Rice has been enriched with beta-carotene, a precursor to vitamin A, by adding genes from daffodils and bacteria.
