Nothing succeeds like excess • Oscar Wilde • The Belle Époque (French for Beautiful Era) is the term often given to a period of European history, usually dated to between 1890 and the outbreak of WWI in 1914. • The period was characterised by optimism, relative peace, economic prosperity and technological, scientific, and cultural innovations. • During this period, the fashionable silhouette changed many times as fashion trends came and went in speedy succession. Grand couturiers such as Worth, Doucet, Paquin, Lucile and Poiret dictated fashion and the seasonal fashion cycle as we know it today began to take shape. • From the vibrant colours, puffed sleeves, nipped waistlines, rich fabrics, fringes, beadwork and fur from the 1890s, to the luxurious fashions of the Edwardian era with their artificial flowers, lace, ruffles, fabric appliqué, beads, sequins and embroideries – Fashion became synonymous with luxury and opulence. • By 1914, the old way of dressing had been abandoned in favour of a new extravagance pioneered by couturtiers such as Paul Poiret and his, what was referred to then as, Orientalist designs. • With the outbreak of WWI in 1914, women no longer had time to devote to fashion, and trends like lace frills, large hats and hobble skirts became impractical. • Belle Époque Fashion, once synonymous with luxury and opulence, had breathed its last breath. • Please follow @fashionandwithscottschiavone on Instagram ( / fashionandw.. ) and don’t forget to SUBSCRIBE to Fashion … with Scott Schiavone, Fashion Curator. • CORRECTIONS APOLOGIES - Sometimes the world isn't perfect and we get muddled and confused... • At 1:40 - The date should be 1890 - 1900 (NOT 1980 - 1900 as the video states) • #fashion #fashionand #fashionhistory #fashionhistorian #fashioncurator #belleepoque #charlesfrederickworth #19thcenturyfashion #1890sfashion #1900sfashion #1910sfashion #jeannepaquin #jeanphilippeworth #opulence #beautifulera
