Dubai: Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates introduced value-added tax from today, a first for the Gulf which has long prided itself on its tax-free, cradle-to-grave welfare system. The expats have expressed concern over the five percent sales tax that applies to most goods and services. However, allaying their fears, the authorities claim the tax rate is too low when compared to other parts of the world.
