Poison Hemlock (Conium maculatum) root is often described as having an “off” odor. Sometimes the account says it smells like urine, other times I’ve seen “sweaty gym socks”. Many times they fail to mention that Poison Hemlock MAY ALSO SMELL LIKE CARROT! This has created the false perception that Wild Carrot (Daucus carota) root (which is edible) smells like carrot whereas Poison Hemlock does not. This is not only false but incredibly dangerous to follow. • I will say that in my testing the Poison Hemlock root did not smell as strongly of carrot as Wild Carrot did, but I would never use a single characteristic that is only a matter of degree to distinguish an edible wild plant from a potentially lethal one. In fact, no matter the two species that I am trying to distinguish I always look for BINARY details. Yes or no. • Queen Anne’s lace HAS hairs on the stem and leaves (1). Poison hemlock does NOT (0). Poison hemlock HAS purple splotching on the stem (1). Queen Anne’s lace does NOT (0). • With binary details, there is no room for interpretation which is dangerous in a situation like this one! • And as always, if you are not 100% of your ID, don’t consume it! • (You’ll notice that I am handling the poison hemlock with my hands. Some people may develop a skin reaction to the plant, but I do not.
