I really didn’t notice it in my headphones. • Second, I really could have done a better job of displaying the bass. Here’s a video of the artwork - • Something Wicked This Way Comes • Third, Happy Birthday to Neil Peart who was born on this date in 1952. If you must know, I happen to share a birthday with him, though he was born many, many years before me. It’s funny how back in 1980, when “Permanent Waves” came out, I was a young fan of 16 and Neil was stately 28. Back then, the 12 year divide between our ages seemed like a lifetime. Now, that distance no longer seems so vast. I think Neil was the missing piece to an amazing puzzle and played a huge part in making the band what it became. I also have a feeling that if Neil had not joined the band, there’s a very good chance many of us would never have even heard of RUSH. • In this video, I’m playing my “Death Studios Tribute Bass”. It’s a melding of two of my greatest interests - bass guitar and horror/mask collecting. I think it is a cool way of tying these things together as I approach my 10th year on YouTube. The bass is the NS Design Radius WAV that I got in June 2018. My guy, Joe Kruse, disassembled it and I shipped the body down south to the incredibly talented Julie Oakes. I’ve known Julie for a few years, first from her YouTube channel - ProgMom67 (she’s also a very gifted musician) and, later, on social media. I’ve long admired her artwork, and we spoke a few times about my commissioning something from her. When I got the bass, we both thought the Radius WAV would make a perfect canvas. Jeff Death, of Death Studios, is my favorite mask maker and I’ve been buying masks from him for close to 25 years. I consider his masks to be works of art and most of the masks behind me in my videos are his. It was pure happenstance that his masks served as, what I think may be, one of the more recognizable backgrounds on YouTube. I sent Julie some photos of a few of my favorite characters and she made the final choice of which masks to feature. The only character that was essential was Tor Johnson because I’ve been using him as my avatar since I’ve been on-line. A bit off-topic, but I once read that the Tor Johnson mask was considered to be one of the most popular and iconic Halloween masks ever made. Since, Julie is a sucker for suckers (of the octopus sort), and she often incorporates them into her designs, we came up with the idea of using the tentacles to tie the masks together. Aside from having a bit of a horror element to them in their own right, they serve as a subtle nod to Tor Johnson and the famous octopus attack scene in the movie, “Plan 9 From Outer Space”. Once Julie got the body, she ran some layout ideas by me and we had a few back and forths and some compromises were made on both sides (I’m sure you are aware of how temperamental some artists can get). Once the layout was settled, Julie got to work on the bass. On a sad side-note, the bass should also be considered, in part, a tribute to John Smith. John was a gifted sculptor who worked nearly exclusively with Jeff/DeathStudios and sculpted three of the four characters that appear on the bass. He passed away unexpectedly, just as the project got underway. RIP John. I knew it was going to come out good, but I think that Julie outdid herself by truly capturing, not only the unique expressions of each mask but, really, the essence of each character in her artwork. While Julie was working on the bass, my guy was busy building a custom pick-up case to house one of those Guild pick-ups that can be found in my Guilds, as well as my Rickenbacker and the Steinberger Synapse basses. I was finally able to pick the bass up this past weekend and this was the first video I did with it. I still need to get back to Joe’s and have a few minor adjustments made to it but, overall, I am very pleased with how it plays and sounds. And, of course, I’m ecstatic about how it looks and I’m proud to own a truly one of a kind instrument such as this. If you have something in mind, I’m sure that Julie could create something special very for you. I will 100% vouch for the quality of her work and her service. Support the living arts! • • A few Julie links - • https://www.decographics.com • / photos • / progmom67 • And, of course, Death Studios - • https://www.deathstudios.com • Oh, the song is “Anthem” by Rush and is off their “Fly by Night” album which came out in !!!1975!!! and featured the one and only Geddy Lee on bass. It is my opinion that this bass line is as well crafted and as challenging as anything Geddy has ever written and played over the band's 40 year career. Not bad for a first album. • I ran out of space. Please see next video...
