Not a single building is seen left intact in a report by the Russian media outlet “Izvestia” from the eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut, the scene of some of the most fierce battles of the Ukraine conflict. • The head of Russia's Wagner mercenary group Yevgeny Prigozhin said on May 20 that his forces had captured all the territory in Bakhmut as promised and would start leaving the conflict zone later this week. • In a short report published on Tuesday (May 23), Russia's Izvestia accompanied some fighters from Wagner around the ruins in Bakhmut. The Wagner mercenaries spoke of some of the assaults they took part in the city, while others talked of dogs left behind and children's toys they had found among the ruins of apartment buildings. • Ukraine's Bakhmut once had a population of 71,000 people and was famous for its nearby salt deposits and its local champagne made using grapes from Crimea. • Moscow says it captured Bakhmut over the weekend after what is said to be Europe's bloodiest battles since World War Two. • Ukraine, however, said on Monday its troops were still advancing on the flanks of the devastated eastern city of Bakhmut, although the intensity of their movement had decreased and Russia was bringing in more forces. • Reuters is unable to verify battlefield reports. • The Sun newspaper brings you the latest breaking news videos and explainers from the UK and around the world • Become a Sun Subscriber and hit the bell to be the first to know • Read The Sun: http://www.thesun.co.uk • Like The Sun on Facebook:   / thesun   • Follow The Sun on Twitter:   / thesun   • Subscribe to The Sun on Snapchat:   / 1633225139   • #russia #ukraine #war
