THE BARLOW KNIFE Episode 186 Although there were a few different makers of Barlows in England, the first Barlow was made in Sheffield, England around 1670 by Obidiah Barlow. He was succeeded by his Grandson John Barlow in 1710, and John Jr.succeeded him in 1745, and it was him that was responsible for developing the exportation of the Barlow knives to America. It is thought that John Russell, was the first American to manufacture Barlow knives, from the Russell Harrington Cutlery Company in Greenfield, Massachusetts factory in 1875. Hard to believe that from 1745 to 1875 all other Barlows were imported from England. • Often times the Barlow was a boys first knife given to him by his father. So what is a Barlow knife? It was a knife designed to be tough and affordable or cheap and sturdy. To accomplish this they made them with an extra long bolster at the pivot end and bare (or no bolster) at the other end. Originally they came with a carbon steel blade and smooth bone handles. Very little finishing and polishing was done to these knives. There were basically three classes of Barlows. The Daddy Barlow; around 5 long, the Standard Barlow; around 3-3/8 long, and the Baby Barlow; under 3 long. The barlows can usually have clip point or spear point master blades. They can be single blade knives or come with a smaller secondary blade, usually a pen blade. Other configurations are available too. Now a days fit and finish is generally much better and you can find some very attractive models to choose from. Companies like Case, Bear Son, Boker, Robeson, Rough Rider, and Schrade still make Barlows and are quite popular still. • Thank you for watching!
