The use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in the production of drugs and chemicals has the potential to be a more environmentally friendly and efficient process. But can we make one of the most controversial and powerful drugs, opioids, in GMO yeast? Researchers at Stanford University attempted to do just that, expressing dozens of genes to make micrograms per liter of some opioids. While the pathway is long, complex, and uses several plant enzymes, it's still impressive that we can make these compounds in yeast at all. • Let me know if you have recommendations for future videos in the comments below!
