June 13, 2017 - In a courtyard in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia I spot some giant tortoises like those on the Galapagos Islands. I was also surprised to see a young boy standing on one of them, so I started recording with my iPhone. This is the uncut video. • This was not the end of my interaction with the boy and his mother. They caught up with me a few minutes later in another part of the church yard, and I showed them the full video here. They were very amused. They did not speak English, but I left them with my business card (in case any of their family was business-savvy). I also gave the boy the equivalent of $2.50, which seemed to be appreciated by his mother. • For the record, I do not approve of standing on tortoises. (I expected the mom to rush in and say, No, no, don't do that! but she just joined in.) This is a leopard tortoise. If its shell can't handle the boy, it wouldn't be much defense against a lion or other predator. These are African tortoises. They have to be tough. • . • ⸻ Links relating to this video ⸻ • 🤳 Part 1 of this video on Instagram: / bvswygrfqzd • 🤳 All my Instagram posts from Ethiopia: / gpc_ethiopia • 🔗 Short link for this video: https://bit.ly/gcyt_tortoise (30 Nov 2020) • 🐦 Notice of this video on Twitter: / 1333346789227945984
