In addition to being able to forward traffic from any port to any port, the traffic is encrypted on its journey because it is passing through an SSH tunnel. An example of using port forwarding would be to bypass a firewall on a remote host. For example, if you have a legitimate SSH session with the remote computer, but the firewall prevents access to services such as Windows Remote Desktop, Windows Fire Sharing or other services, you can connect to the machine with your existing SSH credentials and access the hidden service via port forwarding. SSH port forwarding works on any server with SSH installed including Windows, Linux and Mac OS X. The demonstration in this video shows the use of SSH port forwarding to allow a Kali Linux host to access the Windows Server through Remote Desktop. The Kali Linux client has a logon to Windows via SSH but cannot reach the Windows Remote Desktop because the Windows firewall is blocking port 3389. SSH tunneling (aka TCP relay aka port forwarding) is used to allow the Kali Linux host to reach the Windows through Remote Desktop by forwarding traffic on Kali Linux port 3389 to the Windows server port 3389; all through the SSH tunnel. • The webpwnized YouTube channel is dedicated to information security, security testing and ethical hacking. There is an emphasis on web application security but many other topics are covers. Some of these include forensics, network security, security testing tools and security testing processes. The channel provides videos to encourage software developers and system administrators to perform security testing. Also, the channel educates the next generation of security testers and bug bounty hunters who want to respectfully, legally and ethically help system owners that allow security testing.
