Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares said Spain’s consulate in Jerusalem had been operational long before the state of Israel was established in response to Israel’s plan to impose restrictions on the services provided to Palestinians. • During a joint press conference on Monday in Madrid with his Egyptian counterpart, Sameh Shoukry, Albares said Spain rejects Israel’s restrictions on the consulate and called on Israel to adhere to established diplomatic practices. • On 31 May, Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz threatened to shut down the Spanish consulate in Jerusalem if it continued to offer services to Palestinians. • Spain is one of Europe’s most outspoken critics of Israel’s war on Gaza.
