Kolkata rapemurder case Supreme Court says it is disturbed by CBI findings

The Supreme Court on September 17 observed that the revelations in the new status report filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) were disturbing while hearing the suo motu case concerning the rape and murder of a postgraduate doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. • At the outset of the proceedings, senior advocate Kapil Sibal appearing for the West Bengal government made a plea for halting the live-streaming of the proceedings pointing out that he and other members of the bar were facing severe harassment on social media. He also pointed out that the guidelines issued by the Supreme Court in Swapnil Tripathi v. Union of India (2018) had cautioned against the live-streaming of sensitive and sexual assault cases. • He further flagged that some of his female colleagues were also on the receiving end of rape threats for representing the State of West Bengal before the apex court in the case. The Chief Justice however declined the plea while asserting that it was a matter of public importance.
