https://www.thefilmgate.com/ • Berlin Airlift was a massive humanitarian operation that took place between June 1948 and May 1949. It was launched by the United States, the United Kingdom, and France in response to the Soviet Union's blockade of the western-controlled sectors of Berlin. • In 1945, following the end of World War II, Germany was divided into four zones, each occupied by one of the Allied powers: the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and the Soviet Union. Berlin, the German capital, was also divided into four zones, despite being located deep within the Soviet zone of occupation. • In 1948, the Soviet Union, unhappy with the economic and political policies of the western Allies in Germany, imposed a blockade on the western-controlled sectors of Berlin. The aim was to force the western Allies to abandon their control of the city. • The western Allies responded by launching the Berlin Airlift, which involved flying in supplies of food, fuel, and other essentials to the city. The airlift was a massive logistical operation, involving hundreds of planes and thousands of personnel. At its peak, planes were landing in Berlin every few minutes, delivering up to 13,000 tons of supplies per day. • The Berlin Airlift lasted for nearly a year, until May 1949, when the Soviet Union lifted the blockade. During that time, the western Allies flew in over 2.3 million tons of supplies, keeping the city's residents fed and warm through the harsh winter months. The operation was a significant political and propaganda victory for the western Allies and helped to cement their control of West Germany. • • If you need this clip for offline edit let me know, i'll send you a link.
