An American Avocet! A rare visitor to Southwest Ontario (and all of Ontario). • The American Avocet (recurvirostra americana) is rarely seen in Ontario but during the festival of birds at Point Pelee National Park we visited Hillman Marsh Conservation Area and got to see a small flock of these rarely seen birds. As we watched these birds in the shorebird cell at the marsh we realized very quickly that many birders were showing up to witness these birds. I wish I was able to get some actual video footage but I was only able to capture stills through the scope. The Avocet was difficult to identify for us at first as it was windy and most of them kept their bills tucked away. It wasn't until we noticed the long upward curve on the bill that we realized what we were looking at. It is helpful that Hillman Marsh has an observation blind set up with images and descriptions of possible birds you can see while birdwatching at the marsh. • Distinctive large shorebird with a long, thin, upturned bill. Look for bold black-and-white wings and long blue-gray legs. Breeding adults have buffy-orange wash on head and neck; grayish in winter. Females have more sharply upturned bills than males. Widespread and fairly common in North America, although rare or absent from much of the eastern U.S. Usually seen in flocks, sometimes numbering into the hundreds, foraging in shallow wetlands or estuaries.
