The ileum is an organ for absorption and digestion of food. it secretion, succus entericus or intestinal juice contains numerous enzymes such as lipase, sucrase, peptidase, lactase and maltase which complete the digestion of food substrates to the smallest molecules: monosaccharides, amino acids fatty acids and glycerol which can be absorbed into the blood stream. • The ileum thus is suited to absorb the end-products of digestion in addition to completing the digestion.
