In Pakistan, folktales are a vital part of everyday life. From the passionate love stories like Sohni Mahiwal and Momal Rano to the heroic tales of Balochistan's Mir Chakar Rind, these stories continue to shape the cultural and social landscape. Cinema and television in Pakistan have beautifully woven these legends into their narratives, bringing them to life on screen. • Iconic adaptations include the 1955 Punjabi classic Heer, which depicts the legendary romance of Heer and Ranjha ending tragically, and the 1971 black-and-white music track Dilruba Dilruba, which features the tragic Pashto romance of Adam Khan and his dream queen. The 1979-1982 PTV series Alif-Laila is inspired by Alf Layla wa Layla, known as Alif Laila or Hazaar Ratein in Urdu. From 1993 to 1996, the juvenile PTV classic Ainak Wala Jinn touched folklore by casting a jinn as a central character. • The Pashto film Yousaf Khan Sherbano tells a tale of love and loss, while the 2005 PTV drama Sassi is inspired by the tragic romance of Sassi Punnu, a Sindhi princess and a Baloch prince.
