Thank you for the support! • Thanks for stopping by, this is 2 Minute Classroom and today we are talking about light-years. • I’ve been reading Stephen Hawking's book, “A Briefer History of Time” and it is fascinating. It’s an introduction into astrophysics but you don’t need PhD. to understand it. In fact, your average high school senior could understand and enjoy it. I’ll link it below if your curious. • You’ve probably heard the term light-year referenced in pop culture talking about space travel and just general astronomy, but do you know what it means? • The title to this video asks how many years are in a light year, I’ve heard this question asked before and maybe you have even wondered about it yourself. • However, The problem is, light years are not measured in years. Even though it has years in the name, it not a unit of time, it’s a unit of distance. • So a better question is how many miles in a light year? • A light-year is defined as the distance light travels in a year, and it is a very long distance. The speed of light is approximately 300 million meters per second or about 186,000 miles per second. • To find out how many miles light travels in one year, we just need to turn seconds into years through a series of conversions. So there are 60 seconds in one minute, 60 minutes in one hour, 24 hours in a day, and approximately 365 days per year. We multiply all this together and we get this number (5,865,696,000,000). So a light year is approximately 5.9 trillion miles. • For reference, our favorite dwarf planet Pluto is only 7.5 billion miles away, nearly 1% of the distance light travels in one year. • To why do you use light years if the distance is so long? Because space is huge. The closest star to us other than our sun is Proxima Centauri, and it’s 4.2 light years away, nearly 24 trillion miles. So rather than talking about trillions and quadrillions, we use light years. • If you find any of this fascinating I encourage you to read Stephen Hawking's book linked below, you can probably find it at your local library. • Let me know if you want more astronomy and astrophysics videos in the comments below. • Thanks for watching, and I’ll catch you next time.
