Alexander Muir (1830–1906) wrote this song in 1867, the year of Canada's Confederation, after serving with the Queen's Own Rifles of Toronto in the Battle of Ridgeway against the Fenians in 1866. He is said to have been inspired by a large maple tree which stood on his street in Toronto. The song became popular in the English areas of Canada and for many years served as an unofficial national anthem, but could not be officially recognised because its strongly British perspective made it unpopular amongst French Canadians. Some have asserted that Muir's original version actually had the words The Lily, Thistle, Shamrock, Rose, the Maple Leaf forever in order to include the French. • The Maple Leaf Forever is the authorized regimental march of The Queen's Own Rifles of Canada and The Royal Westminster Regiment. It makes reference to James Wolfe capturing Quebec in 1759 during the Seven Years' War and also the Battle of Queenston Heights and the Battle of Lundy's Lane during the War of 1812. • This song was requested by 1812AndMore and Kevinsufacation. • Lyrics and chords: • A .................................
