Groundwater supplies across Victoria are showing signs of improvement following record rainfalls. While rising groundwater levels aren't as immediately obvious as rising dam levels the benefits are just as important. So how do you keep track of a resource you can't see? • • Video Transcript • DSE monitors groundwater levels throughout the state through the State Observation Bore Network. • • Monitoring has shown groundwater levels improving across Victoria over the past year. • • Marcus Onken, Hyrdogeologist, Thiess Services: • • My name's Marcus Onken, I'm a hydrogeologist with Thiess Services Hydrographics Division. • • The Hydrographics Division have a contract with the DSE for undertaking the monitoring of the State Observation Bore Network (SOBN) bores across Victoria. • • The SOBN contract comprises approx 2500 bores across the entire state. • • Depending on the importance of the bore, a bore can be checked on a schedule either weekly, monthly, quarterly, sometimes bi-annually, and for the less important bores, annually. • • What I've got here is an electronic water level metre. Basically, all it is, is a measuring tape marked at millimetre intervals with an electric sensor on the end. • • When the sensor hits the water level it completes the electric circuit and sets off a tone on the unit up here. • • So that tone there, I've just turned the tone off for a second so I can talk, that tone there is indicating that we've hit the water level - and the end of that silver probe that I showed you before is sitting at the water level now, or in it. • • So wind that back -- and you can see the water level there. And we always read the level back to the same point on every bore -- the same measuring point. • • And the level of this bore at the moment is, the water level in the bore is 95.56 metres below this point here. • • If you think of surface water, surface water is a very important resource and it's very obvious, it's running in rivers, creeks and stored in dams. • • Groundwater's a less obvious resource that's sitting there but it's just as important as surface water resource. And it's used for agriculture and drinking, all the same things that surface water is being used for. • • So when you look at it from that point of view, the management of that resource is vital to maintain it as a resource into the future and ensure that extraction levels are kept at a sustainable level.","styleRuns":[{"startIndex":0,"length":2418,"styleRunExtensions":{"styleRunColorMapExtension":{"colorMap":[{"key":"USER_INTERFACE_THEME_DARK","value":4294967295},{"key":"USER_INTERFACE_THEME_LIGHT","value":4279440147}]}},"fontFamilyName":"Roboto"}]},"headerRuns":[{"startIndex":0,"length":2418,"headerMapping":"ATTRIBUTED_STRING_HEADER_MAPPING_UNSPECIFIED"}]}},{"itemSectionRenderer":{"contents":[{"continuationItemRenderer":{"trigger":"CONTINUATION_TRIGGER_ON_ITEM_SHOWN","continuationEndpoint":{"clickTrackingParams":"CKABELsvGAIiEwjm49qb6-GJAxX4wUIFHYneFBM=","commandMetadata":{"webCommandMetadata":{"sendPost":true,"apiUrl":"/youtubei/v1/next"}},"continuationCommand":{"token":"Eg0SC3ZLLWl5c3YxSVM0GAYyJSIRIgt2Sy1peXN2MUlTNDAAeAJCEGNvbW1lbnRzLXNlY3Rpb24%3D","request":"CONTINUATION_REQUEST_TYPE_WATCH_NEXT"}}}}],"trackingParams":"CKABELsvGAIiEwjm49qb6-GJAxX4wUIFHYneFBM=","sectionIdentifier":"comment-item-section","targetId":"comments-section"}}],"trackingParams":"CJ8BELovIhMI5uPam-vhiQMV-MFCBR2J3hQT"}},"secondaryResults":{"secondaryResults":{"results":[{"lockupViewModel":{"contentImage":{"collectionThumbnailViewModel":{"primaryThumbnail":{"thumbnailViewModel":{"image":{"sources":[{"url":"https://i.ytimg.com/vi/fCOrup5MSSI/hqdefault.jpg?sqp=-oaymwEWCKgBEF5IWvKriqkDCQgBFQAAiEIYAQ== rs=AOn4CLA7B_j4wrM6ehXLeyYWg-mBOOrteA","width":168,"height":94},{"url":"https://i.ytimg.com/vi/fCOrup5MSSI/hqdefault.jpg?sqp=-oaymwEXCNACELwBSFryq4qpAwkIARUAAIhCGAE= rs=AOn4CLCtQnI9Rdr5dXjq_Dfc1kqBONMxVA","width":336,"height":188}]},"overlays":[{"thumbnailOverlayBadgeViewModel":{"thumbnailBadges":[{"thumbnailBadgeViewModel":{"icon":{"sources":[{"clientResource":{"imageName":"PLAYLISTS"}}]},"text":"6 video's","badgeStyle":"THUMBNAIL_OVERLAY_BADGE_STYLE_DEFAULT","backgroundColor":{"lightTheme":2630925,"darkTheme":2630925}}}],"position":"THUMBNAIL_OVERLAY_BADGE_POSITION_BOTTOM_END"}},{"thumbnailHoverOverlayViewModel":{"icon":{"sources":[{"clientResource":{"imageName":"PLAY_ALL"}}]},"text":{"content":"Alles afspelen","styleRuns":[{"startIndex":0,"length":14}]},"style":"THUMBNAIL_HOVER_OVERLAY_STYLE_COVER"}}],"backgroundColor":{"lightTheme":4998424,"darkTheme":4998424}}},"stackColor":{"lightTheme":12564357,"darkTheme":9209968}}},"metadata":{"lockupMetadataViewModel":{"title":{"content":"Weathering, Erosion, and Deposition"},"metadata":{"contentMetadataViewModel":{"metadataRows":[{"metadataParts":[{"text":{"content":"Mike Sammartano
