Understanding Tractor Transmissions

When shopping for a tractor you'll have many different transmission options. It's really important that you know the differences in each option so you can get what you need to do the job you want. In this video we'll cover the old crash boxes , shuttles, power shuttles and hydros. • The cheapest transmissions are very similar to what came in the original tractors. They'll have a series of forward gears that may or may not be synchronized, and a couple of reverse gears which aren't speed-matched to the forward gears. If all you're doing is running a bush hog around and around in the field, they'll do you just fine. • If using a front end loader for an extended period of time, it would pay to invest in a shuttle transmission. A shuttle lets you clutch and shift from forward to reverse with one lever; it'll usually be synchronized so shifting while still rolling is possible, and the forward speed will closely match the reverse speed. These transmissions have about the same reliability as the basic transmissions. • If you have bad knees or don't like clutching, the next step up in transmissions is a power shuttle. It uses electronics and hydraulics to do the clutching for you. Finally, hydrostatic drive is my favorite for loader work, and because it works just like your lawn mower probably does, it's a great choice for a beginner. • The transmission selection will have a huge impact on how well you like your new tractor, it's very important to drive all of the options and make a good choice! • SUPPORT THE TRACTOR MIKE CHANNEL:   / tractormike   • Visit Tractor Mike website: http://asktractormike.com/ • Subscribe to YouTube Channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/tractormi... • Visit Facebook Page:   / ask-tractor-mike-312112962245304
