Winchester's new short magnum is a big deal, offering hunters and target competitors a flat long range trajectory, reduced recoil, enhanced terminal ballistics, and impressive energy as distances increase. Today's review is not academic; yes, I have the charts and graphs to illustrate the potential of 6.8 Western, but I also have two deer and a couple blocks of ballistics gel for your viewing pleasure. • Test Gear: • 1. The obvious first comparison is going to be 300 Win Mag and 300 WSM. Both of those will offer greater energy up close, but 6.8 Western will overtake them past 1,000 yards and provide a flatter trajectory. 270 WSM is almost the exact same cartridge and it has a flatter trajectory within practical distances, but 6.8 Western can pack a heavier punch courtesy of its heavier projectile. The 6.8 high sectional density should also enhance terminal effects. And don't forget that you can load any .277 projectile in 6.8 Western, nearly mirroring .270 WSM. As for 7mm Remington Magnum, 6.8 Western essentially copies its performance in a short-action case. 6.5 PRC and 6.8 Western have nearly identical trajectories and wind-fighting abilities, but 6.8 Western brings considerably more energy on target. • If you want to see more videos like these, become a Patron of the Destructive Arts!
