The Kern County Basque Festival 2024 took place in Bakersfield, Calif. on Memorial Day weekend (May 24 - 27) and there was plenty of amazing food at every Basque venue - The Kern County Basque Club, Woolgrowers Restaurant and Benji's Restaurant. • The Basques have social and family traditions of eating that are influenced by their practices of sheepherding and boardinghouse eating. The role that eating plays in the Basque culture is a huge part of what brings Basque people together, joined by their friends in a communal celebration. • The saying “You are what you eat” is used to recommend good eating habits. In the Basque community, good nutritious food has always been important, especially in the American West, where men and women traditionally worked physically demanding jobs in the fields and the dusty open range. Nutritious high energy sources of food were a staple of daily living for the hard workers. During the day, sheepherders ate hearty beans and meats like lamb chops and stews that filled their tripa - their stomachs. • Like their ancestors before them, they warmed themselves by their campfires and barbecued succulent pieces of meat until the best flavors and ceremonial smoke rose to the occasion. • The Basque people come from the region of northern Spain and southern France and speak the oldest language of Europe, which they call Euskara. • For a list of Basque restaurants across the U.S., click here https://euskalkazeta.com/basquerestau... • #food #Basquefood #Basque
