Andante con moto (11:15) • Guido Cantelli, conductor • The Philharmonia Orchestra • Recorded on August 8, 1955 • at Kingsway Hall, London • The story of how Guido Cantelli was discovered by Toscanini is well known, as is his sudden passing in an airplane crash at the age of only 36. Although his career was brief he did leave behind a legacy of live and studio recordings for future generations. This is the first offering of him on our channel. The Unfinished Symphony seemed particularly appropriate, in the light of his career. On a personal note, I must confess that Cantelli's interpretation in the first movement here has always given me goosebumps since I was a kid. It still does. • There are numerous sources for the present recording both on LP and Digital. Even though a current issue does offer this in stereo , the original catalogues do not list it as that way. • We are encountering more and more recordings from the mid-fifties that say stereo in modern re-issues, but don't sound much like it through speakers. We suspect that this is because not all multi-track recordings from the period were actually intended for stereo, especially many British made recordings of the time. • England was not a quick adapter of stereo for the most part, and although Parlophone had multi-channel capability, and made stereo recordings for the foreign market, multi-track was often used for a very different purpose in the engineering of mono recordings. • For our approach we decided to take a page from their playbook and treat the source as multi-track engineering for mono; using the more reliable field acoustic instead of multi-channel for greater sonic accuracy. • Digital transfer (2020): Parlophone, UK • Field acoustic and sonic restoration (2024): Paul Howard - The Yucaipa Studio • We do not monetize on this channel and our posts are commercial free.
