The State of Identity • Michael Green 🇺🇸 • (Presented at NAVA 57, October 8, 2023, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 🔔) • Each time I give a talk about flags, I begin with this quote from branding designer, Wally Olins: “People want to belong, and they want to display symbols of belonging.” Flags are incredible diving boards into every topic imaginable. In the past, I’ve used them, along with this quote, to spring into talking about sports, logos, toxic nationalism, war, and global unity. Today, I want to use flags as a springboard to talk about personal identity, because I believe we are living in the midst of the greatest shift of identity that humans have and may ever face. I feel uniquely qualified to report on this shift now, having started a flag company which has given me a front-row seat of how people are choosing to display symbols of belonging.
