It was the worst accident to hit the UN mission in the former Yugoslavia since it began its operations in 1992. Eight of the soldiers died at the scene, the ninth succumbed to wounds at a UN medical centre in Sarajevo. The accident occurred when their plunged into a ravine during an off-road crossing in the demilitarised zone of Mount Igman. French UNPROFOR officials denied the accident was caused by a shooting incident. An army spokesman in the French capital, Paris, said initial indications showed that the soldiers were thrown 50 metres • to their deaths. French Defence Minister Francois Leotard flew to Sarajevo on Tuesday to investigate the deaths.
