Speed of sound at very high altitude is much slower than it is in the thick air down here. Therefore, mach 10 at 200,000 feet is much slower than mach 10 here. If you look to the left of the screen you can see his IAS and TAS. IAS is the number in the ribbon, and TAS is the small number at the bottom left. You can look up IAS on Wikipedia or something, it's too long to explain. But TAS is a calculated number (the game is doing this automatically) and it stands for True Airspeed . This is his actual speed in Knots. • Watch that number: He reaches about Mach 10, but as he continues to climb, his TAS actually is decreasing. Let me know if you've got questions! • Reply • @happydappyman • 4 months ago (edited) • @hamsternn He needs to get up high enough so the air isn't too thick to speed through. Once he gets going fast enough, his jet engines are no longer efficient, so the plane switches to its scram jets. A scram jet can only start at high speeds because it has no compressor! It uses a shaped intake to compress the very fast air, and then just injects fuel. Critically though, it still burns air. As he gets higher up, there's less air resistance, but also less air to burn meaning his jets lose thrust and he can't fly as fast. See my other comment above for why he can stay at mach 10 while actually moving slower. • • MSFS 2020 Darkstar from New York to F... • MSFS 2020 Darkstar from New York to Fort Lauderdale • @giovannycalvache7939 • why so slow • @giovannycalvache7939 • @p3rs0n42 he's doing 350 kias at 2:50, mach 1 is 666 kias • @p3rs0n42 • @giovannycalvache7939 Mach 1 at sea level is 661KTAS (not IAS) • At ~32,500ft mach 1 is just about 580KTAS, which is the exact true airspeed he had when the readout flipped to mach 1
