Happy Trilobite Tuesday! Sometimes, new species are hiding inside scientific collections! Museum Curator Melanie Hopkins didn’t need to travel far to find a new kind of trilobite. While working on an exhibit for the Museum’s Louis V. Gerstner, Jr. Collections Core, she discovered a paleontological puzzle that had stumped researchers for more than 150 years. The key was splitting one species of these ancient animals into two. The resulting “new” trilobite, Flexicalymene trentonensis, is described in a recent edition of American Museum Novitates.
