For those who’ve never heard of this stealthy and pervasive disease that sneaks into our lives, it is also known as Sick Building Syndrome. Symptoms include fatigue, burning eyes, headaches, asthma-like wheezing, and gastrointestinal complaints. SBS ranges from mild to extreme cases with one third of us exposed daily. SBS eludes diagnosis and treatment while costing billions of dollars each year. The first famous case of SBS was in 1976 when about 200 legion convention attendees mysteriously fell ill with flu-like symptoms. It took some investigation, but finally was determined that bacteria growing in the ventilation system of the convention hotel were the culprit. They named it legionnaire’s disease. Hotels aren’t the only problem buildings out there. Libraries, churches, offices, hospitals, and even our homes can be making us sick. High rises are particularly susceptible. Bacteria aren’t alone either. Asbestos, lead paint, lead pipes, VOCs (volatile organic compounds), mold, smoke, pollution, viruses, carbon monoxide, dust, chemical fumes, and pollens cause their fair share of damage too. Noise and lighting can exact a toll in headaches, fatigue, eyestrain, and irritability. Airplanes and cruise ships are some of the newest additions to the “buildings” that cause SBS. There is hope though. Air purifiers, better air conditioning systems, natural spectrum lighting, and mold and bacterial resistant building materials are becoming more common. You can also do a lot to prevent SBS for yourself by simply washing your hands often and getting outside for fresh air as much as possible. • Another offender in SBS is noise pollution. Working in an environment with constant machine noise, loud music, phone conversation, traffic noise; you may think you get use to it, but it does exact a toll. Headaches, irritability, and fatigue are often the price. Many of us don’t even know what quiet sounds like anymore. • The modern work space for many of us is a small claustrophobic cubicle, in front of one or two computer screens, with artificial lighting. Some lighting is irritatingly bright, some under-illuminating, which can cause eye strain. Many authorities say it may even upset the normal circadian rhythm, thus affecting sleep patterns. Some forms of artificial light emit low levels of radiation that may sap your energy. • Sick building syndrome, sbs, what is, what is sick building syndrome, what is sbs, fatigue, burning eyes, headaches, asthma, asthma symptoms, gastrointenstinal complaints, carbon monoxide, lead paint, lead pipes, asbestos, sunwarrior protein, vegan recipes, sunwarrior, sun warrior, SunwarriorTribe • -- • Subscribe to our channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_c... • -- • Visit us at: • http://www.sunwarrior.com/ • Like us on Facebook: • / sunwarrior • Follow us on Instagram: • / sunwarriortribe • Follow us on Twitter: • / sunwarrior • Hang out with us on Google+: https://plus.google.com/+Sunwarrior/p... • Follow us on Pinterest: • / sunwarriortribe
