It extends from the inferior part of the scapula to the humerus (crest of the lesser tubercle). It lies in close proximity to its smaller brother, the teres minor, but is not considered one of the rotator cuff muscles, as it doesn't attach to the capsule of the glenohumeral joint. • It has a close relationship with the latissimus dorsi muscle, as it runs parallel and inserts together at the crest of the lesser tubercle of the humerus. Sometimes the muscle fibers of these two muscles even blend together and explain the similar functions: The teres major is involved in internal shoulder rotation, adduction and retroversion of the arm. • In this video tutorial we will go over the attachments, nerve supply and actions of the teres major muscle: • 0:12 introduction • 0:27 teres major origin and insertion • 1:11 innervation (lower scapular nerve, thoracodorsal nerve) • 1:26 functions of the teres major • Want to test your knowledge on the muscles of the shoulder and arm?
