During Oz's monologue to Alberto Falcone in the debut of HBO's The Penguin show, Oz mentions Rex Calabrese, a gangster from his neighbourhood who he looked up to as a child. To him, this man was the gold standard of what it meant to be a gangster. His reign and the life he lived inform Oz's aspirations and goals for The Penguin of Matt Reeves' universe. So much so that when Alberto insults both him and Oz, Oz shoots him dead setting off the premise of the show. But did you know that Rex Calabrese is a fairly recent and important figure in the Batman comics? In The New 52, it was retconned that he was the biological father of Catwoman Selina Kyle. He was a mob boss who operated in Gotham before the existence of Batman and went by The Lion. He was eventually pushed out by Carmine Falcone, The Roman , and lived in Blackgate Penitentiary under an alias so no one knew his identity. Before his introduction, Catwoman's father was Brian Kyle, an alcoholic. Later, it was teased to be Carmine Falcone in the Dark Victory and When In Rome storylines, but was left inconclusive. Since The Batman already revealed Selina was Carmine Falcone's daughter, it's unlikely to be made the crux of a reveal again.
