A barometer is a tool used to measure atmospheric pressure or barometric pressure. They are used by meteorologists to predict changes in the weather. The unit of measurement is called an atmosphere or bar. An atmosphere (atm) is equal to the average air pressure at sea level at the temperature of 15 degrees celsius. The number of atmospheres drops as altitude increases because the density of air is lower and exerts less pressure. • There are three main types of barometers; they are: • 1. Mercury barometers - This is the oldest type of the barometer which was invented by physicist Evangelista Torricelli in 1643. • 2. Aneroid barometers - The aneroid barometer was invented by French scientist Lucien Vidi in 1844. • 3. Digital barometers - The digital barometer is the current most commonly used barometer as it measures and displays data more accurately and quickly than ever before. • In this video, we explain all these types of barometers. • If you liked this video and would like us to make a video on any science topic, please let us know in the comments.
