The Xpedo SPRY platform bike pedals are lightweight, low profile, and big. 28 replaceable pins per pair. • Today on my bike commute I tested the Xpedo SPRY pedals and discussed the advantages and disadvantages of riding clipless-less. ;) • The Xpedo SPRY pins/spikes/pegs didn't seem very sticky even after sharpening them up with a file, so I replaced all of them with the twin tip pins which are better. • One thing I forgot to mention in the video is that the pins on the Xpedo SPRY pedals are removed and installed with a small flat wrench. They are not removeable with an allen wrench like some pedals, so swapping the pins can be an extra hassle. • Flat Platform Pedal Advantage • wear any shoes • easier to get on and off • cheaper generally • bike commuter may prefer • Clipless Pedal Advantage • pull up on the pedal easier • easier to position foot correctly every time • foot stays in place better generally • bike racer may prefer • With the right skills and technique either platform pedals or clipless pedals can work well for a variety of uses. I think preference is more psychological than anything else. • Personally I still like clipless pedals more than platform pedals because I feel faster... but since I have multiple bikes I may keep one bike equipped with platform pedals for a change. • I tend to like the feeling of being locked to my bike with clipless pedals using high spring tension (harder to unlock) and little float (fixed position). This does lend myself to getting lazy with proper pedaling technique, and you could injure yourself if you are not careful. • Flat platform pedals require you to learn proper pedeling technique by scraping your foot backward on the upstroke just like getting mud off your shoe, but don't exaggerate the motion. Keep weight on the pedals at all times. Pins help with slipping especially in wet conditions. • Since the late 1980's pro cyclists have used clipless pedals that were originally developed by Look, which also does ski bindings. Before clipless, platform pedals were used with toe clips and straps they had to reach down to undo - encouragement not to stop! • Shoes are another topic. For platform pedals with pins you want a shoe sole that is somewhat flat, sticky and stiff enough. Sneakers are popular although they take a while to dry when wet. • Note: This is my first bike commute video with platform pedals!! :) • Video - Wait For It...
