My name is Isaiah Shields • I'm spending a year walking across the United States, in an effort to learn and grow as much as I can as a person. • I began walking in Utah. I graduated from University and after working for a few years in corporate finance the best I can recall is thinking one day that it would be interesting to go on a really long walk. • Thinking a structure would help, I eventually looked up, What are the westernmost and easternmost points of the 48 states? . In May 2021, having never shaken the original idea to walk, I quit my job and left what I knew behind. • The real objective was not to successfully walk from coast to coast, but rather to understand the world better: meet people, listen to their stories, and understand new perspectives. • With this in mind I decided that rather than fly or drive to one of those two points I had looked up and then walk to the other, I decided I would first walk to Cape Alava in Washington state (the westernmost point) from my home in Provo, Utah. • Upon reaching the cape, the goal is to then turn around and eventually make it to Maine and the West Quoddy-head lighthouse (the nation's easternmost point). • While I can't articulate well why I feel so driven to do this, I do know it has made me feel alive, and I'm trying to better understand what I can do with my life that will leave me feeling fulfilled.
