This issue is really similar to a condition that happens to humans called Alzheimer's. In your cat’s case, C.D.S can lead to changes in awareness and deficits in learning and memory. According to the American Association of Feline Practitioners, 50% of cats aged 15 years or older show symptoms of C.D.S. • The most common symptoms are: • ● Potty breaks outside the litter box • ● Changes in sleep cycle (meaning that your cat may start waking up during the night and sleep during the day) • ● Confusion • ● Lack of appetite • ● Less interaction with humans and pets (and sometimes they may seem more aggressive) • Other symptoms can also include: • ● Inability to follow familiar routes • ● Slow to learn new tasks • ● And seeming disregard for previously learned training or routes • By the way, these symptoms are all under the umbrella of decreased abilities of learning and memory. • Now let’s discuss the 5 things you can do to fight feline cognitive dysfunction. • The first thing you can do is feed your cat the right nutrition. Choosing foods and treats with high antioxidants and omega fatty acids can be really helpful. • The second tip is to keep your arrangement of furniture and all other things consistent. Since your cat is most likely suffering from confusion or seems to have a disregard for house routes, it will be much easier if everything's the same as usual. • The third tip is to keep your cat’s sleeping area safe and quiet. Sleep is really important because it allows your cat’s brain to reset by removing all the unnecessary stress and toxins. Also, it will be wise to keep a nightlight on while your cat is sleeping. Due to these new sleep-wake patterns, your cat may wake up late at night and start crying out loud. In my experience, I’ve noticed that keeping your nightlight on during the night can help stop the crying. • The next thing you can do is make sure your home is senior-friendly. This can be easily done by providing ramps, more litter boxes, and non-slip pads. • The fifth and final tip is one that I preach a lot to you guys, which is to talk to your veterinarian. Because at the end of the day, we at Planet of the Cats give you guys advice through our own experience and research. But the vet may have the ability to properly diagnose your cat and prescribe the proper medication. It’s only natural to take your senior citizen cat to the vet more, so please don’t feel discouraged. • Now if you enjoyed this video, please make sure to like this video and subscribe to our YouTube Channel.
