THE CONVERSATION 1974 JAZZ IN A SILENT CAGE

The best things shimmer with fear. -- Don DeLillo: LIBRA • This analysis will focus on Francis Ford Coppola's Palme d'Or winning-film THE CONVERSATION. The movie was nominated for Best Picture. Coppola owned cinema in the 70's-- he released this film between THE GODFATHER PART II and APOCALPYSE NOW. Gene Hackman owned 70's acting. He's the cinematic alpha-- rough, streetwise, no nonsense, intelligent; however, this film shows him at his finest, and quite different. He's amazing. I'll discuss how this is so, but I'll concentrate on the revelatory elements of the film. It predicts Watergate and takes place in the panopticon-world of intelligence, the mob, corporations, and wetworks. So many books and films come to mind, and the movie fits into the ouvre of not only the solitary contractor, but the twisted (pun) greed of globocorps, silent work in the night, and the poison of secrecy.
