The name conjures up images of clouds of black coal smoke belching out of the antique “Shay” geared logging locomotives. Screaming steam whistles. Backwoods railroading on hairpin curves and incredibly steep mountain climbs. • This State Park has transformed this old logging company town into a thriving tourist attraction. It’s been many years since I was here. Megan and I recently enjoyed a ride on the Whittaker Train that runs about halfway up Bald Knob, West Virginia’s tallest peak. I’ve never actually done the Whittaker train, my past trips here have always been on the Bald Knob train that runs to the top of Bald Knob mountain. The Shay locomotive is always a treat to watch - built for these challenging conditions, it is a true thrill to hear and watch the whirling drive shafts, clanking gears and get a taste for what this place was like a hundred years ago! 5 of these antiques - Shay 2, 4, 5, 6 and 11 were fired up on the day we rode the train. Shay 5 is the oldest, delivered brand new here in November, 1905, she is still there and still climbing the same mountain like she did over 100 years ago!
