Hymn background • When Mary offered the costly perfume (300 denarii, nearly a year's worth of salary at the time) to the Lord, the disciples gave her a hard time, asking, Why this waste? In the hearts of the disciples, the Lord was not worthy of the perfume. It was a waste to offer such expensive perfume to the Lord. In Judas' heart, the Lord worthed even less, for just 30 pieces of silver (about 120 days’ worth of salary) Judas agreed to betray Jesus. • Yet, God gave His all for us, He gave Himself for us. The Lord Jesus even set up the first bread breaking meeting with His disciples soon after Judas agreed to plot with the chief priests to betray Him away for 30 pieces of silver. The Lord revealed that we are worth Him giving away His precious life for us. He revealed that we are worth Him shedding His precious blood. We are worth the Son of God suffering all the pain and agony for us, the pain of being forsaken by the Father who loved Him most since eternity past. God's sacrifice for man truly stuns the universe, stuns the angels, stuns my heart. God, why this waste? sending Your one and only one Son to die for us sinners? Who are we such wretched sinners to You? Only God can tell and define our ultimate preciousness in His heart. • Many times in brother Daniel Yu's messages, he mentioned the famous question in Psalm 8:4, what is man? Brother Yu shared that when the Lord became a Man in flesh and blood for us and that He chose to become the Son of Man forever, the Lord perfectly and ultimately answered this all-time question asked by men, what is man? What is man's worth? So precious, the Lord came for us. He came personally to tell us who we are to Him. In God’s heart, we are truly irreplaceable. We are that one lost sheep. Even the 99 sheep cannot replace that one lost sheep in the Shepherd’s heart. The Lord so desired to go after the lost sheep, to seek me until He found me. What the Lord did for us ultimately defines our true identity and preciousness in God’s heart.
