Mike Hume is on the board of directors of the Los Angeles Historic Theatre Foundation (LAHTF), which aims to preserve movie palaces, many of them from the 1920s. Attitudes are changing in the US and the LAHTF has been instrumental in preventing many wonderful old cinemas from being demolished. • Mike comes from Edinburgh and was a lighting designer in the UK before moving to LA in 2010. He’s travelled the US - often on his motorbike - photographing magnificent old cinemas. He and McG share memories of the Los Angeles Theater in downtown LA, which McG visited in 1991 to see a triple bill for $3. • Mike describes how things have been very tough in the world’s movie capital during the pandemic. Before lockdown traffic would be stopped for up to three premieres a week in Hollywood. Suddenly in March 2020 all this came to an end. As in the UK, all cinemas closed. But now things are coming back to life and Mike is excited that the famous El Capitan cinema, now a Disney flagship, has re-opened for “Luca.” • He’s particularly thrilled to recount how the famous Radio City Music Hall in New York was saved from demolition by one of the dancers in the movie palace's stage show! • There’s a notable first for Patreon subscribers. Mike shows photos of three cinemas he really loves including his favourite the Los Angeles. • Are you a Patreon member yet?
