In this episode, we’re headed to the streambank to dive into the story of this week’s invasive species: Japanese Knotweed. Originally from Eastern Asia, this fast-spreading plant was brought to North America in the late 19th century as a decorative horticultural plant and for erosion control. However, by the early 1900s, it had escaped cultivation and became a serious problem. Now found in all but five U.S. states and in every county of New York, Japanese Knotweed thrives along riverbanks, lakeshores, forest edges, and open uplands. We’ll explore how this resilient shrub has adapted to different environments and the challenges it poses to native ecosystems. • Help stop the spread!
