The model has been adapted for meter gauge for the Flemish tram cities. The color scheme and furnishings have been redesigned. The trams are built by Siemens / DWA (part of Bombardier Transportation since 1998) in Bautzen, Germany. • The name HermeLijn arose after a competition among Ghent tram drivers. The trams are named after the ermine, because the shape and color scheme of the equipment is somewhat reminiscent of the winter coat of this predator. The capital L is related to the brand name of De Lijn. • The Antwerp trams have also been given the name HermeLijn, although just before that the Gazet van Antwerpen launched the name Salamander for this tram. This name is used for low-floor trams from Dresden, on which the HermeLijn is based. Unlike the Antwerp version, the Ghent HermeLijn has a cabin at each end and doors on two sides, because the tram network only has head ends (only the Flanders Expo terminus has a turning loop). The number of seats is therefore much smaller (58 in Ghent, 74 in Antwerp) but the number of standing places is larger (192 in Ghent and 176 in Antwerp). • The HermeLines consist of five parts (four sections), of which 3 short motor boxes and 2 long boxes with doors and a flat and low floor (35 centimeters above the rail). Unlike the Combino, the HermeLijn does not have a flat floor in the engine compartments, which can be a disadvantage for disabled people. An advantage, however, is that more seats could be created in the engine compartment. The tram weighs 39 tons and has a length of 29.60 meters and a width of 2.30 at seat level. At entry level, the width is 2.20 m. Of the six axles, four are powered by four electric motors with a capacity of 95 kW each. The tram reaches a maximum speed of 70 km/h. Initially, 14 two-way trams for Ghent and 31 one-way trams for Antwerp were ordered. • In October 2005, it was announced that the 45 HermeLines of the first series were suffering from cracks in the construction. The trams were returned to the Bautzen factory for repair. • In the spring of 2013, new lights were installed on the Ghent 6333 (on one side), this tram now runs around with more modern LED lighting. This lighting has now been extended to all other trams. • #antwerptram #HermeLijn #trambia
