Why did the Mongolian prime minister slap Stalin in the face? • In the early 1930s, Stalin was consolidating his control over the Soviet Union and neighbouring countries. One such country was Mongolia who with Stalin's blessing, had come under the control of the communist Peljiidin Genden. However, Genden was also a religious man and had once said their were two great geniuses on earth, Lenin and Buddha. Stalin pressured him to exterminate the 100,000 Buddhist lamas, claiming them to be the enemies within. Genden rejected Stalin's instructions and was eventually called back to Moscow. On the visit, Genden got blind drunk, telling the Soviet leader that Mongolia was considering an alliance with Japan. He then slapped Stalin across the face, broke his pipe and called him a king. Sadly he was soon removed from office and was killed during Stalin's Great Purge. • #History #QuickHistory #Stalin #SovietUnion #USSR #PeljiidinGenden #JosephStalin #Buddhist #Lamas #StalinsSovietUnion #Lenin #Slapped #Buddha #StalinsGreatPurge #StalinsPurge #TheGreatPurge • • Many thanks to the following for the use of their images footage... • Military Museum of Finland, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons • AntonLandao, CC BY-SA 4.0 via Wikimedia Commons • Pavel Semyonovich Zhukov (1870-1942), Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons • Indian Diplomacy, CC BY 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons - link to original video here - • India: The Land of Buddha Celebrating... • Clay Gilliland, CC BY-SA 2.0, via Wikimedia Commons • Hixrat, CC BY 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons • Speech by Joseph Stalin, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons • Bop34, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons - https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fi...
